Strict environmental requirements for motor vehicles force manufacturers to equip engines with exhaust gas toxicity control systems (catalytic converters for petrol engines), which help to reduce the amount of harmful exhaust pollutants. Currently, all modern cars have three-way catalytic converters, or simply three-way catalysts (three-way catalysts – TWC).

A three-way catalyst is a device in the exhaust system of a car that converts the main harmful components of exhaust gases: nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) into less harmful substances such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water, and is a honeycomb-structure ceramic coated with a metal catalyst. This makes it possible to maximise the effective contact area of the catalytic coating with the exhaust gases – up to approximately 20 thousand m2. The ceramic is made fire-resistant – it can withstand temperatures of up to 800–850 °C. Three-way catalysts use precious metals such as platinum and palladium, which cause the oxidation of CO and CH, while rhodium reduces NOx emissions.

A three-way catalyst operates in a closed-loop system together with oxygen sensors (lambda sensors), which regulate the air-fuel ratio in the engine, ensuring optimal operating conditions for the catalyst. The lambda sensor in the exhaust pipe is exposed to very undesirable effects such as high temperature and the chemical aggressiveness of the exhaust gases.

In the event of fuel system faults (poor injector spray, insufficient pressure, etc.), when poor-quality, contaminated or leaded petrol is used, or when it contains unregulated fuel additives, damage to the lambda sensor leads to deposits forming in the catalytic converter. As these deposits build up, the efficiency of the whole engine, and especially of the catalytic converter, decreases – the latter may fail completely (jam). So, when the catalytic converter is clogged, the car may simply not respond to the accelerator pedal, accelerate slowly, etc.

In addition, ceramic dust from a damaged catalytic converter can get into the combustion chamber and leave marks in the cylinders. To ensure reliable operation of the catalytic converter and the oxygen sensors, it is necessary to use XADO RED CAT SHIELD.

Use:

• 1 bottle (250 ml) of the product for 40–60 litres of petrol.

Notes:
Why does the catalytic converter clog?

• Engine oil or antifreeze getting into the catalytic converter – clogged honeycombs.
• Poor-quality fuel – impurities in the fuel continue to burn after the exhaust gases are released and, as a result, overheat the catalytic converter.
• Use of HBO – a poorly configured control unit will cause flame to get into the exhaust gases, and the gases themselves will come out hotter.
• Lambda sensor damage – damage to the air-fuel ratio control system, unburned fuel getting into the catalytic converter.

Attention! Additives containing tetraethyl lead and other currently popular octane-boosting additives passivate the active surfaces of the catalytic converter. This greatly reduces the efficiency of the catalytic exhaust gas cleaning process and is a cause of widespread system failures.
