• The magnet (rotor) turns together with the crankshaft and its field excites the stator windings; without it the generator gives no current
• The one-way bearing (bendix) is the starter clutch inside the rotor: it turns the engine while starting and disengages once it fires up
• If the starter spins freely and the engine does not move, this bearing is usually the culprit, not the starter itself
• The rotor is replaced for weakened magnets, a cracked or spun inner disc and a chipped keyway – then the ignition timing lags or drops out
• Remove it with a tool that screws on by thread, not a leg-type puller; thread-on pullers are a separate item – they are in this category and in the "Tools" category
