• On the photo the length is divided up: 215 mm, 125 mm, three times 30 mm and 185 mm — these are the distances between the splined and the threaded sections
• Shorter sections are marked at the very ends: 28 mm each, 9.5 mm each, 8 mm and 16 mm each. Every line on this photo runs along the axle, so there is not a single shaft diameter on it
• On this page the length is written in centimetres and all the other sections in millimetres; that is how the maker wrote it
• On the second photo the same axle is marked differently: T 23, T 31, T 29 and T 23. What the letter T means, the maker did not explain; the figures stand by four different sections
• The photo shows that the axle is gold zinc plated and has three ribbed splined sections — the hub, the sprocket and the brake drum sit on them
• An axle is chosen by two sizes: the diameter of the shaft and the length. The diameter has to match the inner race of the wheel bearing, and the length has to reach through both lugs of the fork with the nut on
• The third size is the threaded end: too short and the nut does not catch, too long and it bottoms out before it clamps
• The wheel bearings are often changed together with the axle: they have a subcategory of their own, "Bearings", in the same section
• Time to replace it when the axle is bent, when the thread is stripped or when the shaft is worn through where the bearing sits

To be straight with you: the diameter of the shaft is not on the photo — every line measures length along it, so the most important size of the axle you have to measure yourself. Which of the splined sections is for the sprocket and which for the brake is not marked either.
