Air filter high KY - A 83 D40

High air filter, 40 mm connection; KY-A 83 series. The filter's job is to keep dust and sand out of the carburettor and cylinder: a clogged filter chokes the draw, and without one the piston and rings wear out fast.

• Connection diameter 40 mm — the rubber sleeve slips onto the carburettor spigot and is tightened with a clamp; the clamp is in the set
• The housing is high — before ordering, check whether there is enough room for it under the plastics or by the frame
• The filtering element is a mesh: it can be washed and used again, and after washing and drying it is worth oiling with air filter oil (it is in the "Oils & care" category)
• When to change it: when the element stays grey even after washing, when it is torn, or when the rubber sleeve has gone hard and cracked

• An open filter instead of the standard housing lets more air through: the mixture goes lean and the main jet usually has to be taken a size up — jets are in the "Carburettors and their parts" category
